The Therapy Dog Training Program

​Therapy dogs serve as invaluable companions in in various settings, such as schools, hospitals and aged care homes, courts, offering emotional support and joy to individuals. Their unique ability to connect with humans creates a comforting atmosphere, helping to alleviate anxiety and improve mood across all age groups. Dedicated volunteers train their dogs to a very high standard and together with their dogs are breaking down barriers and promoting healing through affection and companionship.

​Our Paws 4 People ™ program is tailored for individuals seeking to train their dogs to a high standard while gaining in-depth knowledge of Therapy Dog training and theory. Participants will explore various topics, including ethical and legal considerations, canine welfare and the human-dog bond, ensuring a comprehensive understanding of effective and responsible Therapy Dog practices and training methods.

Your Paws 4 People™ certified Therapy Dog can work effectively in various environments, leveraging specialised training to provide comfort and support.

It is essential for handlers to have training before providing Therapy Dog services, and our courses are designed to equip you with the necessary skills to work safely and ethically, prioritising the welfare of both your dog and clients. Many course participants report being surprised by the wealth of information they gain, highlighting the importance of our training in enhancing professionalism in the field.

Enrolment Requirements:

 

Your Dog:

We seek happy, healthy, friendly, and confident dogs that genuinely enjoy being around people to become therapy dogs. It's crucial that your dog shows enthusiasm and interest in interacting with new individuals.

Your dog must be at least 12 months old and have basic obedience skills. Unfortunately, we cannot enrol restricted breeds.

You as Handler:

We seek handlers who confidently manage their dogs in diverse situations and can think on their feet to address new challenges. The ideal candidates are those eager to work with their dogs as a team, emphasizing the welfare of both humans and canines. It is essential to recognise that Therapy Dog work goes beyond just bringing a dog to a school or aged care facility; it demands substantial effort and resources. If your motivation doesn't resonate with this level of commitment, we may not be the right training company for you.

A Team Assessment is required and takes approximately one hour to complete, cost of $59 per Dog-Handler-Team (non-refundable).

What you will learn:

 

Practical:

  • Loose lead walking

  • Focus

  • Sit, Drop, Sit-and-Stay, Drop-and-Stay

  • Recall

  • Ignoring people, dogs, food/items on the ground but also on chairs, tables

  • Greeting people on cue

  • Being calm when petted/touched/groomed

  • Walking (open) stairs

  • Crate/mat training; settling on mat

  • Specific Therapy Dog Skills tailored to you desired field of work

 

Theory:

You will receive our Paws 4 People ™ Therapy Dog Handbook, which provides comprehensive information on dog body language, signs of stress, training principles, and more. This handbook will serve as the foundation for the Theory Exam.

What you will get:

​The packed is priced at $1,899 and includes

  • 12 Training lessons held at various locations, 1hr each

  • Therapy Dog Manual

  • Workshop Dog Body Language, either in person or via Zoom, duration approx. 1.5hrs

  • 2-part Exam – Theory and Practical, approx. 1.5hrs

  • Paws 4 People™ Therapy Dog Certificate (awarded after passing of exam).

Passing our exam and obtaining your certificate will demonstrate to prospective volunteer organisations, employers, and facilities such as schools and aged care homes your dedication to a high level of training and professionalism. However, it is important to understand that while this certification is a valuable asset that reflects your preparedness, it does not guarantee a position in your desired field. The journey to becoming an effective therapy dog team involves ongoing learning, experience, and a commitment to building relationships within the community you serve. We advise you to consult your insurance provider and/or volunteer organisation for any related questions including health or certification requirements such as Blue Card.
