Introduction to Mantrailing 4 Dogs

What is Mantrailing?

Mantrailing is a specialised form of tracking where a dog will be presented with a person’s individual odour, from items like a t-shirt or bandana, to follow their unique scent trail. At the trail's start, the dog is presented with the odour sample which is being kept free from other scents, that could interfere with its focus. Once the dog identifies the individual scent, he/she follows the trail. The dog handler does not interfere with the dog and only guides the dog if the dog cannot find the trail. This remarkable skill highlights a dog's ability to filter out numerous competing smells, demonstrating their training and instinctive skills in tracking.

Why is Mantrailing such a great activity for you and your dog?

Following a trail is the most natural thing in the world for dogs (hunting). This gives hunting-motivated dogs a field of activity and they can finally live out their passion and specialisation - together with their owner. Among other things, this has a positive influence on the human-dog relationship. It can also encourage your dog to work calmly, independently and with concentration.

Is Mantrailing good for older dogs, dogs with physical disabilities or anxious/reactive dogs?

Mantrailing is also an excellent physical and mental workout for older dogs or dogs with physical disabilities. Compared to many other activities, mantrailing is very easy on the joints.

Dogs with environmental insecurities or even fears (the most common causes of aggressive behaviour) can also be supported and encouraged through Mantrailing. Through selective perception (only certain aspects of the environment are perceived and others are ignored) during a trail, great success can be achieved with anxious dogs. An example: A dog who is afraid of children in everyday life learns to follow a trail with concentration and manages to ignore the children along the way.

What breeds are suitable for Mantrailing?

Does your dog have a nose? Great, then he has the best prerequisites! From a small pinscher to a large Great Dane, every dog can become a Mantrailer.

What age is suitable for Mantrailing?

Mantrailing can be started playfully as early as puppy age, but older dogs can still get involved.

Mantrailing is an ideal alternative, especially for older dogs who may have been active in dog sports all their lives but can no longer do so for physical reasons. The dog can be exercised under controlled conditions and in a way that is very gentle on the joints.

Lunging 4 Dogs

Lunging? YES, you heard right! As with horses, dogs learn to run in a circle around their owners. A flutter band is stretched as an aid, which the dog can use to orient itself. The owner is in the middle of the circle and gives the dog various body language signals, which the dog then has to carry out from a distance. In this way, we direct the dog's focus more and more to its owner.

But that is not the only positive effect of lunging. The owner also learns to direct their dog from a distance using body language and voice cues. This is an indispensable relief in everyday life, because here too the dog will increase its focus on the owner and be able to be influenced from a distance.

Understanding Dogs

Join us for an informative presentation and workshop focused on the body language of dogs, complete with a handout.

Have you ever wondered what your dog is trying to tell you? What are they feeling in the moment? What might they do next? As a dog owner, walker, trainer, or daycare staff, being able to answer these questions can enhance your interactions with our furry friends. Dogs communicate through their bodies, and this workshop will teach you how to "read" your dog and understand how your own body language affects their well-being—an enriching experience for both humans and dogs!

CONTENTS OF THE PRESENTATION
- How does a dog express itself?
- Key elements of body language
- What can be conveyed through body language?
- Observing and describing: from nose to tail
- Understanding gaze, facial expressions, ears, mouth, body, and tail
- Interpreting photos of dog body language

Goal

Our goal is to familiarise you with various dog body language signals, helping you interpret them more effectively over time. This knowledge can help prevent unpleasant situations during dog encounters by enabling quicker recognition and adaptation.
